Maritime Volunteer Service
City of Portsmouth Unit
We meet every week to train in nautical skills on the water onboard our vessels. Whilst at the National Seamanship Training Centre members train in other essential skills such as navigation, passage planning, engineering and more. These maritime skills are then put into practice by providing safety and marshal boats at various local events such as:
- Round the Island Race
- End of Cowes Week Fireworks
- Solent Swims
- Pier to Pier Swims
- Triathlons
We also have a strong social side. Once training and other activities are over we often convene to The Ship & Castle and we have social occasions throughout the year such as Summer BBQ’s, Fireworks & Chilli Night, Working Parties and more. We have found these particularly important in recent times when many voluntary organizations have ceased to exist.
The more serious side of what we do is form a corps of civil resilience volunteers ready to assist the emergency services and local authorities in times of need.
